Adenium Ganeshum

When I first saw an Adenium plant, I almost got dazed with its shape. I was virtually witnessing the most spectacular similarity
with Lord Ganesha as described in the following verse-

Vakratunda Mahaakaaya Suryakoti Samaprabha,
Nirvighnam kuru me deva, sarva kaaryeshu sarvadaa.''

O Lord Ganesha of curved trunk, large bodied and radiant as million Suns, please make all my work free from obstacles always.

The kind of devotional delight I got from the very sight of this plant, made it so special that I couldn't hold myself for long until I acquired one. Getting this plant was not difficult at all. It's commonly available in almost all the nurseries by its botanical name Adenium Obesum .The name itself speaks of its obese characteristic. The trunk (Caudex) of the plant swells gradually, every time taking different shapes with striking similarities with Lord Ganesha.

My first experience with adenium was a total disaster. I planted it like any other succulent plants but perhaps the Lord was angry with me for not following the plantation ritual. Infact, this plant needs to be installed and not merely planted. After the first causality, I followed the plantation ritual with full devotion and dedication to the Lord and realized that the plant has gradually incarnated itself
into Lord Ganesha, showering his blessings on all the inmates. Then on, the plant has proved to be very lucky for me and my family and we could get over many hurdles and obstacles in our lives.

We strongly believe that installing an Adenium plant in home will ward off all evils and bless with abundance, prudence and success.

It is almost two decades since we properly installed Adenium (which we now call ''Adenium Ganeshum'') in our home and now we have over hundred of them. Each, representing Lord Ganesha in different moods and facets.

Adeniums also known as Desert Rose originated from Africa and Arabia. Chinese regarded Adenium as a good-luck plant for its fat belly, which became very popular in East Asian countries. Although grown and cultivated world over, Thailand now has emerged as one of the major cultivator and exporter of hybrid Adeniums. India is also fast emerging as a major cultivator of Adenium varaities.

Adenium has a fat trunk (caudex) which gives it a natural Bonsai look. Also known for its profuse flowering, lot of hybrid varieties has been developed. Now, Adeniums are available in numerous vibrant colours and shades. The most striking feature of this plant is its caudex which can be shaped like a sculpture adding aesthetic appeal to it. One can even go to the extent of making a gallery of Adenium sculptures since each plant tends to grow differently and can be cultivated in accordance to the theme.

Adeniums are basically hardy, succulent, tropical plants. They enjoy abundance of sunlight, rich moist soil and of course personal attention with tender care. They flower almost throughout the year except in winters when they go in partial dormancy and shed their leaves but with the advent of spring the leafless plants actually start blooming with exotic flowers in bunches. It's an experience worth a
long wait.

For cultivation, as a thumb rule, develop mothers' instinct and you would know all by yourself what is needed to be done.

Adenium is much more then just a plant. For us, it is Adenium Ganeshum, the svayambhoo Ganesha, who has emerged from the earth in form of a plant to shower its blessings.

Adenium Species-
Adenium Swazicun, Adenium Somalense, Adenium Arabicum, Adenium Boehmianum, Adenium Multiforum,
Adenium Crispum, Adenium Obesum and numerous hybrids.
